3 Characteristics of Smarter Teams
Because my work helps companies deliver excellent service to their customers, I like to stay up-to-date about anything that might help that happen. Teamwork! So key.
When I saw this article about teams, I wanted to share this recent research on this question: What really makes a highly functioning team?
From the New York Times, “Why Some Teams Are Smarter Than Others” (link below):
1) Their members contributed more equally to the team’s discussions, rather than letting one or two people dominate the group,
2) Their members scored higher on a test called Reading the Mind in the Eyes, which measure how well people can read complex emotional states from images of faces with only the eyes visible,
3) Teams with more women outperformed teams with more men. This is partly explained by the fact women, on average, were better at “mind-reading” than men.
In essence, members of smart teams communicate equally in discussions, possess good emotion-reading skills, and have more women on the team.
Just as I suspected! What I have been teaching in my TuneUps is precisely what makes smart teams. It’s always nice to have research back up what I have been teaching for years.
